My angle grinder keeps dying mid-cut - help!

Hey guys, I've got a DeWalt 4-1/2" angle grinder that's about 2 years old. Lately, it's been stalling out on me when I'm cutting through steel - it just slows down and stops, even though I'm not pushing hard. I've checked the brushes and they look fine. Any ideas what's wrong? Is it the trigger switch or the armature?

That sucks, Dan. I've had that happen with a grinder and it turned out the armature was toast. You can test it with a multimeter, but sometimes it's cheaper to just buy a new grinder, especially if you got it on sale. I'm all about budget - look for a good deal on a refurb or wait for a holiday sale.

Chris is right that armatures die, but before you toss it, check the trigger switch too. I've seen those fail and cause power drops. But honestly, if you're a serious user, you should upgrade to a Metabo or Makita - they don't have these issues as much. I've got a Metabo that's been through hell and back, still runs like a champ.

Yeah, I'd check the switch first. Also, could be the carbon brushes not seating right. Sometimes they get stuck and don't make full contact. Take 'em out and check the springs. My dad's old grinder had that issue - cleaned the brush holders and worked fine. Cost $0 to fix.

Thanks guys, I'll try checking the switch and brushes again. I don't want to sink money into it if it's the armature - I'll probably just wait for a sale and pick up a new one. I've got a project coming up, so I might just buy a cheap one to get by. Appreciate the help!
