Hey folks, I’m building a 12x16 deck next weekend. Need to cut some 2x6 pressure treated, maybe some rebar for the footings. I’m thinking about getting a grinder with a cutoff wheel – any suggestions? My budget is around $100-150.

FIRST OFF – safety! Always wear a full face shield and gloves when using a grinder. That said, for your budget, look at the DeWalt DWE402. It’s got a 7.5 amp motor and is super reliable. Just make sure you use the right guard for cutoff wheels.

I’d go with the Makita XAG04Z if you’re okay with cordless. It’s a bit over budget at $200 but it’s their 18V LXT and will save you from running a cord across the yard. For cutting PT lumber, a 4-1/2” grinder with a Diablo diamond blade works great. But for rebar, get a proper metal cutoff wheel.

Honestly, for a one-off deck project, just rent or borrow a grinder. Or get a cheap one from Harbor Freight – the Bauer 4.5” for $40. It worked fine for my shed’s rebar and some angle cuts. Save the coin for better lumber! Also, keep a fire extinguisher handy – grinding PT wood can spark and catch fire.
