Need grinder for deck build - which one?

Hey everyone, I'm about to start building a 16x20 deck. I've got a circular saw and drill but need a grinder for cutting bolts, rebar, and maybe some metal brackets. Not sure if I should get a 4.5" or 5" or even 6". Also, corded or cordless? I don't want to break the bank but I also don't want to buy twice. Any recommendations? Thanks!

For deck work, a 4.5" corded grinder is the sweet spot. You don't need a 6" unless you're cutting thick steel all day. Get a good brand like DeWalt or Makita, 7-9 amp. Corded because you'll have power on site. Also, pick up some cut-off wheels and a grinding wheel. Don't cheap out on wheels either, they can shatter. And always wear a face shield and gloves! Oh and unplug it before changing wheels. Trust me, I've seen too many guys get hurt.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Felix on brands. If you want a grinder that lasts, go with Milwaukee. The 4.5" corded is a beast. I've had mine for 8 years and it still runs like new. DeWalt is okay but Milwaukee is the way to go. Cordless is nice but for a deck build, you'll be running it for extended periods, so corded is better. Also, consider getting a variable speed one for more control.

I just finished my deck last month and used a corded DeWalt 4.5". Worked great. I also used it to cut the metal post bases and it zipped right through. One tip: get a few extra wheels because you'll go through them faster than you think. And yeah, safety first! I always wear my safety glasses and ear plugs. The noise is no joke. Also, don't forget to let the tool do the work, don't force it.

All good advice, but I want to emphasize safety. Please, please wear a face shield, not just safety glasses. Grinders can throw debris at high speed. Also, make sure you use the guard that comes with it. I see so many people remove it for convenience, that's a recipe for disaster. And check your wheels for cracks before mounting. If you drop a wheel, replace it. Also, never use a cut-off wheel for grinding, they can explode. Stay safe and enjoy your deck build!
