PSA: Don't be a dummy with your grinder disc guard!

Hey everyone, just a friendly reminder from your local safety inspector. I've seen way too many guys take the disc guard off their angle grinder 'for better visibility'. I get it, but it's a huge risk. Had a guy in my shop last week get a knot in his pants from a shattered disc. He was lucky it wasn't his leg. Keep the guard on, wear your face shield, and use the right disc for the material. Stay safe out there.

Amen, Steve. I've been in the trade for 20+ years and I never run a grinder without the guard. I also wear a full face shield and leather gloves. Seen too many close calls. Also, make sure the rpm rating on the disc matches the grinder. A disc coming apart at 10k rpm is like a grenade. Good reminder, man.

I'll be honest, I used to take the guard off for tight spots, but after seeing that video of a disc shattering and hitting a guy in the neck, I never do it anymore. I also got a pair of those anti-fog safety glasses because I was always taking mine off to see. Anyone got a good recommendation for a face shield that doesn't fog up when you're sweating?

I'm just a plumber, but I use a grinder for cutting cast iron and tile. I always wear a respirator too, not just for the dust but for the smell of the cut. The guard is a no-brainer. And for fogging, I use a simple mesh face shield, it lets air through and never fogs. Might not stop fine dust but works for me.

Good point, Paul. Respirator is crucial too. I see too many guys skipping that. And for fogging, I've had good luck with a light coat of dish soap on the inside, or you can get anti-fog spray at any welding shop. Stay safe, all.
