Scored a DeWalt Grinder for $50! Worth it or too good to be true?

So I was at the pawn shop today and saw a DeWalt 4-1/2" grinder, model DWE402, for $50. It looks barely used, no scratches, and the cord is in good shape. I've been wanting a grinder for a while but didn't want to drop $100+ on a new one. Is this a steal or a trap? Any advice on what to check before I buy it?

Felix, $50 for that model is a steal if it works. Check the brushes - you can see them through the vents; if they look worn, it might need replacing but that's cheap. Also spin the spindle by hand to make sure it's smooth. And listen for any weird noises when you pull the trigger. If it all checks out, I'd grab it. I've had mine for 10 years and it's a workhorse.

JEALOUS! I paid $120 for that same grinder last year. It's awesome for metal projects. Just be careful with the paddle switch - some people accidentally turn it on. But for $50, even if it needs a new switch, you're still ahead. But yeah, like Wendy said, check the brushes. A quick test in the store is key. Good luck!

I bought a used one once and the previous owner had run it so hard the gearbox was full of gunk. So my tip: open the gear case (4 screws) and check the grease. If it's black and gritty, walk away unless you want to rebuild it. Otherwise, $50 is a no-brainer. Even if you have to put $20 in parts, you're still saving money.

Thanks guys! I went back and checked it. Brushes looked fine, spun smooth, and the guy let me plug it in - ran quiet. I didn't check the grease but I'll do that when I get home. Bought it! Can't wait to use it on my project this weekend. Thanks for the tips!
