Hey guys, just hit up a pawn shop and found a Makita 9557PB 4-1/2" grinder for $40! Looks barely used, comes with a case and a couple grinding wheels. I've been wanting one for some metal projects and light cutting. Is this a steal or am I missing something? Anyone have experience with this model?

Nice find, Will! That's a solid grinder. I've had mine for years, does everything I need. For $40 that's a bargain, even if it's used. Just check that the bearings are smooth and the arbor isn't bent. I'd grab it if I were you.

Will, that's a great price for a Makita. But be careful—check the power cord for nicks and make sure the trigger lock works. Also, pawn shops sometimes have tools with messed up guards or missing safety features. If everything checks out, it's a score.

I've restored a few of those. The 9557PB is a workhorse. For $40, even if you have to replace the brushes or a bearing, you're still ahead. I'd say test it, maybe take it apart to clean and lube, and you'll have a grinder that lasts another decade.

Thanks everyone! I'm gonna go back tomorrow and snag it. I'll definitely check the cord and guards per Mike's advice, and maybe do a quick teardown like Larry said. Stoked to finally have a grinder!
