Hey everyone, apprentice carpenter here - been on site for about 8 months. My boss asked me to cut some concrete pavers for a patio job tomorrow with our 4.5" angle grinder. I've used it on wood before but concrete seems sketchy. Last time I tried, the blade bound up and kicked back hard - almost took my thumb off! What am I doing wrong? Should I be using a different blade or technique? Safety tips appreciated before I end up in the ER!

Matt, you're lucky you still have all your digits! Drywall wizard here - we use grinders for metal studs all the time. First rule: ALWAYS use a diamond blade rated for concrete/masonry, NOT a wood/metal blade (they'll shatter). Second: full face shield AND safety glasses (double up), plus gloves and long sleeves - concrete dust is nasty stuff. Third: let the tool do the work - don't force it, and make shallow passes. Oh, and clamp that paper down or use a paver clamp - freehand cutting is asking for trouble. Stay safe kid!

Landscape architect chiming in - we cut pavers daily. BeamBetty's right about the diamond blade (look for "continuous rim" for cleaner cuts). Pro tip: mark your cut line with chalk, then score it lightly first. Keep the grinder at a consistent angle, and WET CUT if possible - less dust, cooler blade, safer. If dry cutting, use a dust shroud attachment and respirator - silicosis is no joke. And for god's sake, check your guard is properly adjusted before you start!

HVAC tech here - we use grinders for ductwork. Listen to these guys, Matt. One thing I'll add: watch your cord placement! Tripping over it while cutting is how people lose limbs. Also, let the blade stop completely before setting it down. Seen too many new guys get lazy with that. Your boss should be showing you this stuff though - if he's not, that's a red flag. Maybe ask him to demo it first?
