Hey folks, my Craftsman riding mower's battery won't charge. It's a 12V lead-acid, and the charger shows green like it's full, but when I put it in the mower it just clicks. Tried jumpstarting - nothing. Battery is only 2 years old. Anyone seen this before?

First thing, check the charger output with a multimeter. Could be a bad charger even if it shows green. Also check the mower's charging system - the stator or voltage regulator might be toast. But if the battery is just clicking, it might have a dead cell. Do you have a load tester?

I had a similar issue with my John Deere. Turned out the battery cables were corroded under the insulation. Cleaned 'em up and it was good as new! Also, check the fuse if your mower has one. Sometimes it's the simple stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked the charger with a multimeter - it's putting out 13.8V so that's fine. The battery reads 12.4V at rest, but when I try to start it drops to like 8V. Guess that means dead cell? I don't have a load tester but I'll just get a new battery. Appreciate the help!

Classic dead cell. 12.4V is low too - fully charged should be 12.6-12.8. If it drops that much under load, replace it. Also check your mower's voltage regulator when you put the new battery in - a bad one can kill a battery fast. Good luck, buddy.
