Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring using composite decking. I've got most of the framing tools, but I'm stuck on what to use for cutting the boards cleanly. I've heard a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade works, but some say a miter saw is better for angles. Any recommendations? Also, do I need a special blade for composite? Thanks!

I've done a few composite decks. A miter saw is a lifesaver for cutting angles on the railings and stairs. But for long rips, a circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade rated for composites works great. Just be careful with dust—it's nasty stuff. I'd recommend a dust collection system or at least a mask. Also, a track saw if you've got the budget gives super clean cuts.

fixitfelix is spot on. I'd add: go with a blade that has a high tooth count (like 80-100 teeth) for a smoother finish. And dont forget to predrill holes for screws—composite splits easy. I've seen guys use a jigsaw for cutouts too, but a circular saw is more accurate. Good luck with the project!

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll invest in a good miter saw since I'll be doing a lot of angle cuts. Any brand suggestions? I saw a DeWalt on sale but not sure if it's worth the extra cash over a Ryobi.

I've got a DeWalt 12" sliding miter saw—it's been rock solid for years. Makita and Bosch are also top choices. Ryobi is fine for occasional use, but if you're doing a whole deck, the precision and power of a better saw pays off. check Facebook marketplace for used ones too.
