Found a Crazy Deal on a Self-Propelled Mower - Worth It?

Hey guys, so I was browsing at my local hardware store and spotted a self-propelled mower on clearance. It's a Honda HRX217, marked down from $799 to $399 because it's last year's model and the box is a bit beat up. I've been using a push reel mower for years, so this seems like a steal. But is it worth it? I have a small-ish lawn, maybe 1/4 acre, with some slopes. Would this be overkill or should I jump on it?

Dude, $399 for a Honda HRX is insane! I've had mine for 5 years and it still runs like a champ. The self-propelled feature is a game-changer, especially if you have slopes. It will save your back. I'd say grab it before someone else does. Just check it over to make sure the box damage isn't hiding anything, but Honda's are built tough.

I agree with Sparky, that's a great deal. But keep in mind, that model has the 'Versamow' system which lets you mulch, bag, or discharge. You'll need to get the right blades if you want to switch modes. Also, the HRX is a commercial-grade lawn mower, so it's not overkill for a 1/4 acre. It'll last you 15+ years if you maintain it. The only downside is it's a bit heavy, but the self-propelled helps. I'd say go for it, but check the serial number to make sure it's not stolen or something.

I'd double-check the condition of the engine and the deck. Since it's a display model or returned, there might be issues. Pop the hood, check the oil, look for any gas leaks. Also, test the self-propelled transmission - sometimes they can be finicky. But if it passes inspection, that's a fantastic price. I just bought a comparable Toro for $550 and I thought I got a deal. You could also ask if they'll throw in a warranty or an extra blade. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, guys! I'm heading back there tomorrow to check it out more thoroughly. Sparky, good to know about the Versamow, I'll make sure to get the right stuff. Tim, I'll check the serial number. Sarah, I'll do a full inspection - might even bring a friend who's a small engine mechanic. If everything checks out, I'll probably pull the trigger. I'll update you all if I get it!
