So I was mowing the lawn yesterday and caught a rock that shot out like a bullet. Missed my shin by inches. Got me thinking - what PPE do you guys actually wear when doing yard work? I usually just wear jeans and boots but after that close call I'm rethinking. Eye protection? Ear plugs? Let's hear it.

Dude, you got lucky. I always wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Those mowers are loud as hell and you only get one set of eyes. Also, steel-toe boots are a must. I've seen guys lose toes to lawnmower blades. Not worth the risk. Get a good pair of goggles that seal around your eyes, not just cheap sunglasses.

I learned the hard way too. Was edging the lawn and a piece of wire flew up and hit my cheek. Now I wear a full face shield when I'm doing anything with a string trimmer. Looks dorky but who cares. Also, gloves with good grip so you don't slip and cut yourself. And don't even get me started on flip-flops. Saw a neighbor mowing in flip-flops once. Darwin award candidate.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm definitely getting better eye and ear pro. Any specific brands you recommend? I don't mind spending a bit for quality.

I use 3M Peltor earmuffs and some no-name safety glasses from Home Depot. They work fine. Just make sure the glasses are ANSI Z87.1 rated. For gloves, I like Mechanix Wear. They last forever.
