PSA: Don't Forget Your PPE When Mowing!

Hey folks, just a friendly reminder from someone who's had a close call. Yesterday I was mowing with my safety glasses off (thought I'd be fine, it was a quick job) and a small stone flew up and hit me right in the eye. Luckily I was blinking and it just grazed my eyelid, but it scared the hell out of me. Wear your damn PPE! Safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, and sturdy boots. It's not worth risking your eyesight over a few minutes of convenience.

Good reminder, SparkySam! I learned that lesson the hard way too - got a piece of twine wrapped around my ankle once from a weed eater. Nasty cut. Now I always wear long pants and closed-toe boots. Also, I use ear muffs, not just plugs, cause that mower noise adds up over time.

Couldn't agree more. I've been a contractor for years, and I never skip the PPE. One thing I'd add: consider a dust mask if it's dry and dusty. You don't want to be breathing in all that pollen and dirt. Also, if you're using a string trimmer, a face shield is great because those flying debris can get everywhere.

Good point on the dust mask. And I should mention, make sure your PPE fits properly. I had a pair of safety glasses that kept fogging up, so I took them off - mistake! Get a good anti-fog pair or at least adjust them well. Also, check for any cracks or damage before each use. And don't forget to clean them after mowing - they get dirty quick.

Anti-fog is a lifesaver! I also keep a spare pair of glasses and earplugs in my toolbox just in case. And for you young guys out there, protect your hearing now - tinnitus is no joke. I'm 45 and already have a constant ring in my ears from years of not wearing protection. Learn from my mistake!
