Safety first! Don't learn the hard way like I did (PPE question)

So last weekend I was clearing some brush with my string trimmer and a rock flew up and hit me right in the shin. Now I've got a nice bruise and a lesson learned. I was just wearing shorts and sneakers like an idiot. What PPE do you guys actually wear when doing lawn work? I'm on a budget so I don't want to buy a whole suit of armor, but I also don't want to lose an eye. Any recommendations for cheap but effective gear?

Oh man, been there! I caught a ricochet off my old trimmer and it left a welt for a week. Now I never skip safety glasses. You can get a decent pair for like $5 at HF. Also, wear long pants and boots. Steel-toe if you got 'em, but even sturdy work boots will help. And don't forget hearing protection if you're running a gas trimmer or mower all day. I use those cheap foam earplugs. Stay safe!

I've got a full face shield I use when I'm running the brush cutter or chainsaw. For regular trimming, safety glasses and a good pair of gloves are a must. I also recommend chaps if you're doing any chainsaw work. But for lawn care, the biggest thing is eye protection and boots. I've seen too many people in flip-flops. Also, a good hat to keep the sun off. Skin cancer is no joke.

As someone who restores old mowers and trimmers, I can tell you that the old guys used to wear nothing but jeans and a t-shirt. But we know better now. I always wear my Stihl helmet with the face shield and ear muffs when I'm doing heavy stuff. For light trimming, just safety glasses and gloves. And make sure your trimmer has the deflector shield attached! So many people take it off for 'better visibility' and then get pelted. Also, check your blade for nicks and replace if needed. Dull blades throw more debris.
