Best measuring tools for building a deck?

Hey everyone! I'm about to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard and I want to make sure my measurements are spot on. What measuring tools do you recommend? I've got a basic tape measure, but should I invest in a laser level or something more advanced? Any advice for a first-timer?

For a deck, you definitely want a good tape measure with a locking mechanism. I'd also grab a laser distance measure for quick and accurate long distances, and a chalk line for snapping straight lines. A 4-foot level is essential for checking posts and beams. Just remember, measure twice cut once!

I'm on a budget, so I just use a cheap tape measure and a level I got at a garage sale. But if you're gonna do it right, spend a bit extra on a good tape measure with a bold print and a 25ft length. And a string line works just as well for marking, no need for a laser if you're starting out.
