Digital caliper acting up - readings jumping all over the place!

So my trusty digital caliper (Mitutoyo, 6") started acting weird today. The numbers jump around like crazy, even when the jaws are closed. I've changed the battery, cleaned the jaws, but no luck. It's driving me nuts because I need precise measurements for a project. Anyone else had this issue? Is it fixable or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one? I'm pretty obsessive about accuracy, so this is really bothering me.

Man, that sucks. I've had cheap calipers do that after a while. Usually it's the battery contacts or the slide getting dirty. Have you tried cleaning the slide with some isopropyl alcohol? Also, check the battery compartment for any corrosion. If it's a Mitutoyo, it should be repairable. But if you're looking for a budget replacement, the Harbor Freight ones are surprisingly decent for the price. I've had mine for 2 years and it's still going strong. Just don't expect Mitutoyo precision.

I had a similar problem with my caliper. Turned out the battery was low even though it was 'new'. Sometimes you get a dud. Try another fresh battery. Also, make sure the battery compartment is clean and the contacts are bent correctly. If that doesn't work, it might be the internal electronics. I'd say if it's under warranty, send it in. Otherwise, DIYDave's suggestion of a cheap replacement is good. I use a dial caliper now, no batteries to worry about. But I'm just a weekend warrior, so what do I know?

Thanks for the tips. I did clean the slide with alcohol and checked the battery contacts, but I'll try another brand new battery just in case. It's out of warranty, so I might have to replace it. I'm hesitant to go cheap because I need the accuracy for machining. Might just have to shell out for another Mitutoyo. Ugh.

If you do go Mitutoyo again, check Amazon Warehouse deals. Sometimes you can get a like-new one for a good discount. Also, consider the coolant-proof models if you work in a shop. But yeah, precision costs. Let us know how it goes.
