My Circular Saw Blade Won't Spin - Is the Motor Dead?

Hey all, new to the forum. I've got a Makita 5007MG circular saw that I've had for about 5 years. Yesterday, while I was cutting some 2x4s, it just stopped spinning. The blade isn't stuck or anything, the motor hums but the blade doesn't turn. I've checked the power cord, and the switch seems fine. Any ideas before I take it to a shop? Thanks

Welcome to the forum, Will! Sounds like your saw's been through a lot. The humming but not spinning is a classic sign of a dead capacitor or a bad brush. Since it's a Makita, it's worth checking the carbon brushes first - they're easy to replace and cheap. If they're worn out, they won't make good contact with the armature. Also, check the armature for any obvious burn marks. If you're not comfortable with that, I'd still advise against a shop - they'll charge you an arm and a leg. Let us know what you find!

Before you go pulling the motor apart, have you checked the spindle lock? Sometimes it engages inadvertently and stops the blade while the motor runs. Also, make sure the blade itself is properly tightened - a loose arbor can cause slipping. It's worth a quick glance. If that's all fine, then yes, it's likely the brushes or the field coil. But check the simple stuff first. And when you do open it up, have a multimeter ready to test the switch and continuity. That's saved me many times.

Thanks for the tips! I checked the spindle lock and the blade tightness - all good. The motor hums but the blade won't budge, even when I try to turn it by hand (with it unplugged, of course). Sounds good, Will. While you're waiting for the brushes, you might want to blow out any dust from the motor housing. Sometimes it causes arcing and wears the brushes faster. Good luck, and keep us posted!
