Hey everyone, I’m planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I need a new tape measure that can handle framing and decking. I’ve been using a cheap 25-footer but it keeps breaking. What do you pros use? I’m looking for something durable with a good standout. Budget around $30-$50.

I’d go with a Stanley PowerLock 25 footer. It’s got a solid standout and the blade is coated so it doesn't rust. I’ve had mine for years on my shop. If you want something a bit more heavy duty, check out the FatMax. That thing is a beast for framing.

I second the FatMax. I built a shed last year and used the 25’ FatMax. The standout is like 11 feet, and the hook grabs nails real good. Only thing is it’s a bit heavy, but you get used to it. Also make sure to get one with a fractional scale if you’re not great with math.

Listen, for deck framing, you want a tape that can take a beating. I’ve been using a 30’ Lufkin for years. It’s got a chrome finish that doesn’t glare and the hook is magnetic. But if you're on a budget, the Stanley FatMax is your best bet. Just don't buy the cheapest one at the hardware store – you'll end up replacing it halfway through the job.

Thanks guys! I think I’ll go with the FatMax based on your advice. I saw it at the store for $28. Appreciate the help!
