Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got the plans, but I'm not sure what measuring tools I should pick up. I have a basic tape measure and a level, but anything else you'd recommend? Want to make sure everything is square and level. Thanks!

For a deck, a good combination square is handy for checking 90-degree angles on posts and beams. Also, a chalk line is a lifesaver for laying out long straight lines. If you're pouring concrete footings, a water level or laser level can save you a lot of hassle.

I'd add a speed square – super versatile for marking angles and checking square. And don’t forget a good 100-foot tape for long measurements. Maybe even a laser measure if your budget allows, but a tape works fine. Oh, and a framing square for the ledger and joist layout.

Honestly, for a deck, a laser level is worth its weight in gold if you want everything perfectly level. I use a self-leveling cross-line laser – it makes sure your ledger board and beams are dead level. Also, a digital angle finder can help with stair stringers if you're adding steps.

Great suggestions, thanks everyone! I'll grab a speed square and a laser level for sure. The chalk line sounds smart too. Appreciate the help – I'll post pics when it's done!
