Spotted a crazy deal on laser levels at Harbor Freight - worth it?

Hey guys, just swung by Harbor Freight and they have their 3-point self-leveling laser level on clearance for $39.99 (normally $89). I'm in the market for a decent laser for tile layouts - anyone have experience with this model? Seems too good to be true for that price. My old bubble level is driving me nuts on these big bathroom jobs.

Steve, I bought that exact model last year for some ductwork alignment. It's... okay for the price. The self-leveling works but it's slow, and the battery life sucks. For $40 it'll get you through a few jobs, but don't expect it to survive a drop from a ladder. If you're doing precision tile work, you might want to save for a Huepar or DeWalt. Then again, for forty bucks you can't really go wrong as a backup.

Harbor Freight lasers are junk for roofing work - won't hold up to sunlight or vibration. But for indoor tile? Might be fine. Check the return policy though. Last time I bought HF clearance it was final sale. If it dies in 3 months you're SOL. Personally I'd spend the extra $100 on something that won't crap out when you need it most.

Thanks for the input guys. Hank - how's the accuracy on it? If it's within 1/8" over 20 feet that's all I need for most residential jobs. Paul - good call on the return policy, I'll check that. Might grab one just for quick layout stuff and keep using my trusty 4' level for critical lines. At this price I could buy two and still save money over the big brands.

Accuracy was decent indoors - about 1/8" at 15ft in my testing. The vertical line gets a little fuzzy past 20ft though. Pro tip: buy their 2-year warranty for $8. If it dies, you get store credit. Not bad for $50 total. Just don't expect it to replace your real levels. It's a 'good enough for now' tool, not a 'rely on it daily' tool.
