Tuna can test for lawn watering? Sounds fishy but maybe practical?

Just read this article about the 'tuna can test' for lawn watering. Apparently you put a tuna can in the lawn and measure how long it takes to fill during watering to ensure you're giving it enough. Anyone tried this? Seems too simple but maybe it works?

Never heard of it, but honestly, I use a rain gauge and a simple timer. If it helps people not overwater, cool. But I bet it's more about people not using a smart controller. I've got a Rachio and it does all that for me. But for the DIY crowd, go for it.

As a woodworker, I'm all about precise measuring, but for the lawn? I just set a timer for 20 minutes per zone and move on. However, the can test might be good for spots where water pools. But I'd rather spend money on a moisture meter than bend over with a can.

I tried the tuna can test a couple years ago. Works fine if you have a flat lawn. But with my uneven yard, the can fills unevenly. Ended up with soggy spots. Better to dig a little hole or use a screwdriver to check moisture. But if it saves your lawn, all good.
