Tuna Can Test? Sounds fishy... but maybe it works?

Hey everyone, I came across this article about the 'Tuna Can Test' for lawns. Basically, you put an empty tuna can on your lawn and run your sprinkler, then measure how much water collects. Interesting concept, but I'd be careful. Using a tuna can might not give you an accurate measurement if it's not perfectly level. Also, make sure you clean that can out real good, unless you want raccoons digging up your lawn. Safety first! I'd recommend using a proper rain gauge or even a few straight-sided cans for consistency.

I've actually tried this! Works pretty well, and you can't beat the price. I used a couple of old tuna cans I had in the recycling. Just make sure you mark the water level with a Sharpie so you can measure later. Saved me a ton on my water bill last summer. But yeah, clean 'em out or you'll attract critters.

I've been using a similar method for years, but with coffee cans. Tuna cans are a bit small, so you might need to run the sprinkler longer to get a good reading. Paul's right about uneven lawns. I'd add that you should also check for runoff. If water starts running off, you're watering too fast. Maybe split the watering into shorter sessions. And always wear gloves when handling those cans—edges can be sharp!
