Deck Build: Which Pliers for Cable Railings?

Hey everyone, I'm building a deck this summer and I'm planning to use stainless steel cable railings. I need to tension the cables and cut them. I've been looking at pliers but I'm overwhelmed. What would you recommend for a DIYer? I don't want to buy a whole pro setup, just the essentials.

For cable railings, you definitely need a good pair of cable cutters, not regular pliers. I'd get a dedicated pair of cable cutters - they make clean cuts and don't flatten the cable. Also, for tensioning, you'll need a cable tensioner tool, but for the pliers, I'd recommend a set of long-nose pliers with a wire cutter. I use Klein Tools myself, but for occasional use, a cheaper set from Irwin or Crescent would do. Just make sure they're comfortable in your hand.

Safety first! When cutting stainless cable, wear safety glasses because the ends can snap and fly. Also, use a file to deburr the cut ends so they don't snag. As for tools, I agree with Rick - a cable cutter is key. But for the tensioning, there are special pliers for that, but if you're on a budget, you can use a turnbuckle and a wrench. Still, I'd get a pair of adjustable pliers (like Channel Locks) for grip.

Since you're doing a deck, you'll also need to pull the cable through the posts. Needle-nose pliers with a 45° angle are handy for that. I have a pair from Knipex that are my go-to. They're a bit pricey, but they last forever. And for cutting, I actually use a Dremel with a cutting wheel for a super clean cut. But if you want pliers, get compound cutting pliers - they give more leverage. Just watch your fingers!
