DeWalt vs Makita Pliers: Which Ones Actually Last?

Hey all, I'm torn between the DeWalt 8-inch linesman pliers and the Makita 8-inch. Both feel good in hand, but I've heard mixed reviews on longevity. I do a lot of electrical work and need something that won't chip or loosen up after a few months. Anyone had experience with both? Which one holds up better?

I've got both sets actually. The DeWalt's have better grip right out of the box, but after about 6 months the teeth started wearing down. The Makita's took longer to break in but they've been solid for over a year now. Also, the Makita's have a tighter pivot joint that doesn't get sloppy. I'd go Makita if you're using them daily.

Funny you say that Felix, I've had the opposite experience. My Makitas had rust spots after a couple weeks (maybe a bad batch) but my DeWalts are going strong after 2 years of heavy use. I also find the XRP (now discontinued?) linesman pliers had better cutters than the current model. Have you tried the newer Dewalt's with the laser-hardened edge? Mine are still sharp.

Thanks guys! Sounds like it's a coin toss. Dan, do you have a model number for the ones with the hardened edge? I might give those a shot. Felix, any issues with the Makita grip? I have sweaty hands sometimes.

Sarah, no issues with grip even when wet, but I wear gloves most of the time. The handles have that rubber overmold that's not too squishy. If you go DeWalt, check the DWHT70263 - I think that's the one with the hardened cutter. Good luck!
