Harley Tool Kits: Gone the Way of the Dodo?

Saw this article and it got me thinking. Remember when every bike came with a decent tool kit? I've got a '78 Shovelhead and that thing had more tools than my garage. Now they're all about weight savings and electronics. What's your take, fellas? You need a full toolkit or is a cell phone and a credit card enough these days?

Man, I'm young but even I know that's a shame. I mean, I ride a sportster and the 'tool kit' is basically a screwdriver that doubles as a tire iron. You break down on the road, you're gonna need more than that. I always carry a little pouch with the essentials. But I guess Harley figures you'll call a tow truck or something. Still, it's kinda like a tradition being lost, you know?

Ha! I remember when I bought my first Harley back in '85. The toolkit was almost as big as the battery. But times change. They got all that ABS and infotainment now. Probably can't even work on half that stuff without a computer anyway. My advice? Take the money they save on the tool kit and invest in a good roadside assistance plan. And a Leatherman. Always carry a Leatherman.

Pete, you got a point about the computers. I tried to adjust the idle on my buddy's new Road King and needed a damn laptop. But still, there's something to be said for being self-sufficient. Maybe they should at least offer a tool kit as an option or something. I bet a lot of guys would pay extra for it. Just for the nostalgia if nothing else.
