Deck pressure washing - need advice on PSI and nozzle

Hey all, I'm about to pressure wash my 20-year-old cedar deck before staining it. I've got a 3200 PSI washer with adjustable nozzles. Should I use a 25 degree tip or a 40 degree? I'm worried about etching the wood. Any advice?

Tim, I'd go with the 40 degree tip and keep the wand moving. Cedar is soft. I once used a 25 degree on a fence and it left lines. Also, maybe back off the PSI a bit if you can. Test on a small area first.

Agreed. I've been cleaning decks for ages. Use a detergent that's wood-safe, let it sit, then rinse at a low angle. And for god's sake, don't get too close! That's how you get that fuzzy look.

Thanks Pete and Sarah. I'll do the test spot. I was also thinking of using a rotary nozzle, but I guess that's too aggressive for cedar?

Yeah, rotary is a no-go for soft wood. Stick to a fan tip. And if you're using a 3200 PSI, you might want to stand further back than usual. I usually do about 2-3 feet. Good luck on the stain!
