Gas vs Electric for cleaning my deck?

Hey all, I’m finally getting around to power washing my deck before staining it. It’s about 500 sq ft, wood, not too grimy but some algae. I’m torn between a gas unit (maybe 3000 PSI) or an electric one (2000 PSI). Budget around $400. Which way should I go? Any specific models you’d recommend?

I’d go gas for that size deck, Dave. Electric will do the job but you’ll be fighting with the flow rate if it’s a cheap one. Look at the Simpson MegaShot 3000 PSI gas model, it’s around $350 and has a Honda engine. That thing will tear through algae and you can adjust the pressure for stain prep. Just remember to use a surface cleaner attachment.

Honestly, I’ve got an electric Ryobi 2000 PSI (the brushless one) and it cleaned my 600 sq ft deck fine. Took a bit longer but no fumes, quiet, and less maintenance. If you are not in a rush, electric is less hassle. For $400 you can get a top-tier electric with a long hose. Check out the Greenworks 2000 PSI with the foam cannon.

Depends on if you want to use it for other stuff. If it’s just the deck, electric is easier. But I’m a gas snob because I also do driveways and fences. For your deck, a 3000 PSI gas will be overkill and might damage the wood if you’re not careful. I’d say get an electric with at least 1.2 GPM. The Sun Joe SPX3000 is a solid affordable option and has two soap tanks for switching.
