Hey guys, I’m planning to clean and stain my 400 sq ft deck this spring. It’s got some mildew and old peeling stain. I’ve never used a pressure washer before. What kind should I get? Electric or gas? Any specific brands/models you’d recommend for a newbie? Budget around $300.

For a deck, go electric – gas is overkill and you might damage the wood if you’re not careful. Look for one with adjustable pressure, at least 1800 PSI but no more than 2500 PSI. Sun Joe SPX3000 is a solid choice for your budget. Use a wide tip and keep it moving. Don’t get too close or you’ll gouge the wood! I’ve seen too many decks ruined by high pressure.

I’ll second the Sun Joe. I’ve used mine for years on my deck and fence. Pro tip: if you’re staining afterwards, use a wood cleaner first and let it sit. Also, a surface cleaner attachment saves time and gives a more even clean. Don’t forget to wear eye protection – that water blast can fling debris.

I know Paul said gas is overkill, but if you plan on doing more than just the deck (like cleaning a driveway or siding), a gas one gives more versatility. I have a DeWalt 3400 PSI gas model and it’s a beast. But for a first-timer on a deck, maybe stick to electric. Just watch some YouTube vids on technique. Also, never use a zero-degree tip on wood – that’s for concrete.
