Building a Cedar Deck - Which Rotary Tool Should I Get?

Hey everyone, I'm finally tackling my dream project - a 20x16 cedar deck in my backyard. I've got all the lumber, but I need a good rotary tool for cutting, sanding, and maybe even carving some decorative touches. I've been browsing but can't decide between a Dremel 4300 or a Proxxon IBS/E. What do you guys recommend for a first-timer?

Welcome to the deck-building club! I've restored a ton of old decks and for your money, the Dremel 4300 is a solid workhorse. It's got the variable speed and lots of accessories. For cutting cedar, you'll want a good straight bit and a plunge router attachment. Proxxon is nice too, but for a beginner, Dremel's aftermarket support is unbeatable. Plus, you can get a flex shaft if you need to get into tight spots.

Just a safety tip - when cutting with a rotary tool, make sure you're using the right guard and eye protection. Those little bits can snap and fly. Also, keep your fingers clear of the spinning bit! I've seen too many injured hands. As for tear-out, scoring the cut line with a straightedge and utility knife first helps. And use a down-cut spiral bit.
