DeWalt vs Makita Rotary Tool: Which One's Worth the Money?

Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new rotary tool. I do a lot of detail work on my woodworking projects, engraving, sanding in tight spots, that sort of thing. I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt DW660 and the Makita RT0701C. Both look good, but I'm torn. Any of you guys have experience with either? What's your take?

I've owned both, actually. The DeWalt is lighter and has a smaller grip, which is nice for precision work. But the Makita has more torque and runs smoother at high speeds. If you're doing heavy grinding or cutting, Makita wins. But for fine detail, the DeWalt feels better in hand. Also, Makita's collet system is easier to change bits. I'd lean Makita if you'll do a mix of work.

I'm on a budget, so I'd say go with the Dewalt if you can catch it on sale. It's usually $20-30 cheaper. I got mine for $40 on a special and it's done everything I've needed for carving and sharpening. Just don't expect it to be a workhorse for hours on end. And spare brushes are cheaper too, if you're into that.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either. But if you want a bit more versatility, check out the Dremel 4300. I know it's not what you asked, but it's a solid middle ground. I've had my Dremel for years and it's still going strong. The flex shaft attachment is a game changer for detail work.

Good points, thanks. I think I'll go with the Makita since I do a lot of cutting and grinding. The extra torque sounds like what I need. Plus, I've heard the variable speed is more accurate. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
