DeWalt vs Makita Rotary Tool: Which One's Worth the Money?

Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new rotary tool. I've been using a cheap one from Harbor Freight for ages and it's finally given up the ghost. I'm torn between the DeWalt Dremel (I know it's not Dremel but you know what I mean) and the Makita. I do a lot of detail work on trim and some light metal grinding. Which one has better speed control and durability? I've heard Makita's are tanks but DeWalt might have better ergonomics. Any thoughts?

I've owned both. The Makita is a workhorse, no doubt. The speed control is smoother and it runs cooler even under heavy use. But the DeWalt feels better in hand, especially for extended sessions. I do a lot of renos and the Makita has held up longer for me. The only thing is the Makita is a bit heavier. If you're doing fine detail work, weight matters. I'd say go with Makita if you're going to be grinding or cutting, but for precision, DeWalt might be easier to maneuver.

I've used it for engraving and small carving, and it hasn't skipped a beat. I've heard Makita has a slightly higher max RPM, but honestly, I never need that much. The key is the chuck - DeWalt's is super accurate. I'd say try both in the store if you can. Ergonomics are personal.

I'm with DrillMaster. Makita all the way. I've dropped mine off a ladder (don't ask) and it still runs perfectly. The DeWalt might be lighter, but I've seen too many of them burn out on job sites. Also, the Makita has a longer cord if you get the corded version, which is handy. But hey, if you're just a weekend warrior, either will do. Just don't buy the cheap ones. You get what you pay for.
