DeWalt vs Makita Rotary Tool: Which One Should I Get?

Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new rotary tool. I've been using a cheap no-name one for years and it's finally kicked the bucket. I'm torn between the DeWalt Dremel (I mean DeWalt) and the Makita. Which one do you guys think is better for general DIY stuff like cutting tile, sanding, and engraving? I'm leaning towards DeWalt because I already have their drill and impact driver, but I've heard Makita has a smoother variable speed.

Hey Sam! I've been down this road. I own the Makita RT0701C and it's been a beast. The variable speed is smooth and it doesn't vibrate as much as I thought it would. I've used it for everything from cutting off bolts to polishing. But honestly, the DeWalt is also solid. I think it comes down to ergonomics and the accessories. Do you have a preference for collet size? Some people like the 1/8" vs 1/4".

I'll chime in – I restore old furniture and do a lot of detailed carving. I've had both. The DeWalt's motor is more powerful and it runs cooler during long sessions. But the Makita has a better chuck mechanism – easier to change bits one-handed. Also, the spindle lock on the Makita is more convenient. If you're going to be doing precise work, the Makita's finer speed control is a winner. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input, Wendys and Sam807! I didn't think about the chuck mechanism. I'll be changing bits a lot. Makita sounds like the better choice for that. But I've also read that DeWalt's attachments are more readily available in stores. Is that true or just my local store being biased?

I've noticed that too – around here, DeWalt accessories are everywhere, but I actually order Makita stuff online most of the time. And honestly, the quality of the Makita collets is better – less runout. Plus, you can get a flex shaft for both, but I found the Makita one to be smoother. Just my experience.
