Hey guys, I'm upgrading from a cheap Harbor Freight rotary tool and I'm torn between the DeWalt DW660 and the Makita RT0701C. I do mostly woodworking and some light metal grinding. Which one has better ergonomics and speed control?

I've used both. Makita has a smoother variable speed dial, and the collet lock is way easier. DeWalt feels bulkier but has a longer cord. For woodworking, go with the Makita—it's quieter too.

Gotta disagree, the DeWalt is a tank. I've dropped mine off a ladder and it still runs flawlessly. Makita's plastic casing cracks if you look at it wrong. Plus DeWalt parts are easier to find at Home Depot.

I've had the Makita for 3 years on job sites. No issues. But if you want to use it with a router base, the DeWalt has a better dust collection attachment. Depends on your primary use tho.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'll go with the Makita for the speed control and quieter operation. The dust collection isn't a big deal for me since I mostly detail sand. Appreciate the help!
