Need advice: Which rotary tool for cutting deck boards?

Hey all, I'm building a new deck next month and need to cut some 2x6 pressure-treated boards. I've got a circular saw but sometimes it's too big for detail work. Thinking of getting a rotary tool. Any recommendations for a model that can handle deck board cutting? Not looking to break the bank but want something reliable.

Mike, I've been a carpenter for 35 years and I'll tell ya, a rotary tool ain't the best for cutting deck boards. You'll burn through bits like crazy. If you must, get a Dremel 4300 or a DeWalt 20V rotary tool. But honestly, a jigsaw with a good blade will serve you better for deck work. Just my 2 cents.

Gotta agree with Dan. Rotary tools are for detail stuff, not framing. But if you're set on one, the Dremel 4000 is a solid choice. I've used mine for trimming dowels and cutting small notches. For deck boards, you'll want a carbide cutting wheel. Still, a circular saw with a sharp blade is faster. Maybe get a compact circular saw if your full-size is too bulky.

I do a lot of renovation work and I keep a rotary tool in my kit for odd jobs. For deck boards, I'd say skip it. But if you're gonna buy one anyway, the Milwaukee M12 rotary tool is great for tight spots. I used it to cut some PVC and small metal brackets. Just don't expect it to replace a saw. Also, wear eye protection—those cut-off wheels shatter.
