Need rotary tool for cutting deck boards - which one?

Hey everyone, I'm about to start building a new deck and I need a rotary tool for cutting the boards. I've never owned one before. What do you guys recommend? I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want something that'll crap out after one project. Any advice?

Rotary tool for deck boards? You mean like a Dremel? Those are great for small stuff but for cutting deck boards you'd be better off with a circular saw or a jigsaw. Unless you're just trimming edges? I have a Dremel 4300 and love it, but I wouldn't use it to cut 2x6s all day. It'll burn out. What exactly are you cutting?

Yeah, I gotta agree with DrillMaster. A rotary tool is more for detail work. If you're on a budget, get a corded circular saw for the big cuts and a cheap rotary tool for notches and stuff. I got a Wen rotary tool for like $20 and it's fine for occasional use. But for deck building, you need a real saw.

Oh, I see. I thought rotary tools were for cutting anything. I already have a circular saw. I just need something for cutouts around posts and maybe sanding tight spots. So a rotary tool would work for that?

Exactly! For cutouts around posts, a rotary tool with a cutting wheel is perfect. I used my Dremel to notch out my deck boards around the railing posts. Just take it slow and let the tool do the work. Also get some sanding drums for smoothing. The Dremel 3000 is a good starter, or if you want cordless, the Milwaukee M12 rotary tool is awesome but pricier. Check craigslist for used ones too.
