Hey everyone, I’m planning to build a deck for the first time. I’ll be using pressure-treated lumber and want to smooth it out before staining. I don’t have a sander yet. What do you recommend? I’m thinking a random orbital sander but not sure on brand or grits. Budget around $100.

Nice project! For a deck, you might want to look at a belt sander first to take off rough spots, then finish with the random orbital. But if you just get one, get a good random orbital like a DeWalt or Bosch. 60 grit for initial, then 120. Stay away from cheap brands.

I’ve done a few decks. Honestly, I’d rent a floor sander for the big flat areas. Too much work by hand. But if you’re set on buying, a 5-inch random orbital is fine for edges. I use a Festool but that’s way over budget. Check out the Makita BO5041, it’s around $120 and solid.

For pressure-treated, a random orbital is perfect. Get one with dust collection cause that will save you big time. I like the Ridgid because of the lifetime warranty but you have to register it. 60 grit to start, 80, then 120. Don't skip grits. And wear a respirator!
