Hey guys, I'm knee-deep in a whole-house refinishing job. I need a new 5" random orbital sander. Can't decide between the DeWalt DWE6421 and the Makita BO5041K. I've heard Makita's dust collection is top-notch, but DeWalt has that variable-speed dial. Any thoughts? I'm leaning toward DeWalt 'cause I already have their batteries for my drill, but I'm open to corded if it's better.

Paul, I've restored a few dozen pieces of antique furniture, and I've used both. The Makita BO5041K is a beast for dust extraction—that vacuum attachment is no joke. But if you're going cordless, DeWalt's flexvolt stuff is solid. For heavy use, I'd say go corded Makita. Less vibration, better balance. Plus, you won't be tethered to battery life mid-sand.

I'm a Makita fanboy for life, but I gotta be real: that DeWalt DWE6421 has a softer grip that saves my hands on long sessions. The Makita is a little harder plastic. Also, Paul, don't forget the dust bag on the Makita clogs faster unless you use a vac. DeWalt's filter is easier to clean. For a whole house, I'd go DeWalt for comfort and variable speed. Makita's on-off switch is kinda stiff.

Appreciate the input, guys. Hank, I see your point about corded for heavy use. Sarah, that comfort factor is hittin' home—my hands get sore after a couple hours. I think I'm gonna try the DeWalt. Worst case, I can return it to Home Depot. Thanks!

No problem, Paul. Just remember to use good paper—Diablo or 3M. And if you ever need to strip paint, grab a cheap Harbor Freight sander for that job. Don't ruin your good one! Good luck with the refinish.
