Is it just me or are orbital sanders way too dusty?

Hey guys, I've been using my new random orbital sander for a few days now and man, the dust is everywhere. I'm wearin a basic dust mask but I can still taste it. Are there better respirators for this kinda work? Also any tips to keep the dust down? I'm thinkin about getting a shop vac hookup.

Larry, get yourself a half-face respirator with P100 filters. Those cheap N95 masks ain't cuttin it for fine dust. Also, yeah, hook that sander up to a vac with a HEPA filter - total game changer. I use a Festool CT MIDI and it keeps the air clean. Cost some $ but worth it for your lungs.

What Sam said. Also, if you're sanding drywall or old paint that might have lead, you absolutely need a proper respirator, not just a dust mask. I've seen too many guys get sick from ignoring PPE. And fore real, work outside or with good ventilation if possible. A box fan in the window helps too.

Thanks guys! I already ordered a respirator and a HEPA vac attachment. Gonna set up a fan too. Better safe than sorry. Appreciate the advice!

No prob. Also, make sure your sander's pad is clean and not clogged - that can kick up more dust. I use a brush to clean mine after each use. Stay safe out there!
