Sander recommendations for a deck and shed project

Hey everyone! I'm about to start a big project: building a new deck and a small shed in my backyard. I need to sand a lot of wood – some old boards I'm reusing and new pressure-treated lumber. I've only used a cheap palm sander before and it took forever. Looking for something more powerful but not overly expensive. Any recommendations? Also, should I get a belt sander or an orbital? Hey OP! For a project like yours, I'd say go with a random orbital sander (ROS) with a decent dust collection hookup. They're versatile and leave a smooth finish without the swirl marks of a palm sander. Look for one with variable speed – that's key for working on different woods. I have a Makita BO5041 and it's a workhorse. If you're dealing with really rough wood, you might want a belt sander for the heavy material removal, but it's aggressive and easy to gouge. Maybe rent one if needed. Also, get some high-quality sandpaper – it makes a huge difference.

Don't forget safety! When sanding pressure-treated wood, always wear a dust mask or respirator – the dust is nasty. Also eye protection. And if you're using a belt sander, be careful with the kickback. I've seen too many injuries. But for the deck, I'd second the ROS recommendation. Also, if you're doing a lot of sanding, consider a sander with a vacuum attachment or a shop vac to keep dust down. That will save your lungs and make cleanup easier.

I'll throw in my two cents. For a deck and shed, I'd actually get a combo: an orbital sander for finishing and a belt sander for the rough stuff. The belt sander can flatten warped boards quickly. But belt sanders are heavy – your arms will feel it. If you're not in a rush, a ROS with 60-grit will take care of most. Also, check out the Bosch GET75-6 – it's a beast but pricey. If budget is tight, the DeWalt DWE6423 is solid. And don't forget to use a sanding block for edges – power sanders can round over corners too easily.
