Hey folks, I'm refinishing my old cedar deck and I'm stuck on the sanding step. I've got all the old stain off, but the wood is pretty rough in spots. I've got a random orbital sander and a belt sander in my garage - which one should I use for this? The deck is about 300 sq ft and I want it smooth enough for a new stain coat. Don't wanna mess this up!

Belt sander for the heavy work, orbital for finish. Start with 60-grit on the belt to knock down the rough spots and old finish remnants, then switch to your orbital with 80, then 120. Don't skip grits or you'll see swirl marks. And for god's sake, keep the belt sander moving - it'll dig trenches if you linger. Rent a floor model orbital if you value your back.

Tim's right about the belt for heavy removal. But lemme add - if you've got any metal hardware (screws, brackets) make sure they're countersunk or you'll shred your paper. Seen too many guys ruin good sanders on deck projects. Also, wear a respirator - cedar dust is no joke. My two cents from the welding bay.

OMG I tried sanding my deck last year with just my little orbital and it took FOREVER. Listen to Tim! I ended up renting a big floor sander from Home Depot and it was a game changer. But be careful on the edges - I gouged a couple boards with the belt sander when I got tired. Maybe practice on a scrap piece first? Good luck!

Thanks everyone! Belt then orbital it is. Greg - good call on the hardware, I've got some raised screw heads to deal with. Debbie - renting a floor sander might be smart for the main area. Appreciate the tips - off to buy some 60-grit belts!
