Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a 12x16 deck this spring. I've got some basic tools but need a good saw for cutting the framing lumber (2x8s and 4x4s) and deck boards. Should I get a circular saw, miter saw, or something else? Budget is around $300. Thanks!

For a deck, a good circular saw is a must. I'd recommend the Makita 5007MG - it's a beast and will cut through anything. But if you can stretch your budget, a sliding compound miter saw (like the DeWalt DWS780) will make crosscuts way easier. For $300, maybe look at a cordless circular saw combo.

Honestly, don't overlook a cheap circular saw and a speed square. I built my whole deck with a $60 Skil saw and it came out fine. Spend the rest on a good blade like the Diablo. Also, clamp a straightedge for long rips. No need to break the bank.

I agree with Mike on the miter saw if you're doing a lot of cuts. But for portability, a circular saw is better. Check out a used one on Craigslist. I got a Bosch CS10 for $80. Pair it with a nice blade and you're golden. Also, don't forget a good tape measure and chalk line!

Thanks for the tips! I think I'll go with a circular saw for now and maybe add a miter saw later. I found a Dewalt DWE575 on sale for $130. That should work, right? Any blade recommendations for pressure-treated lumber?
