Hey guys, I'm planning to build a 12x16 shed in my backyard. I've got some experience but this is my first big project. I need a saw for cutting plywood and 2x4s. Should I get a circular saw or a miter saw? Budget is around $200. Any recommendations?

First off, get some safety glasses and ear pro! For a shed, a circular saw is more versatile. You'll need to cut sheets of plywood and long lumber. A miter saw is great for crosscuts but not for ripping. With $200, get a decent 7-1/4" corded circular saw. Brands like Makita or DeWalt are solid. Also, a speed square and a straightedge will help you make accurate cuts.

I agree with Mike! Circular saw all the way. But I'd also recommend a cheap jigsaw for curves if you're doing any window cutouts. I built my deck with just a circular saw and a jigsaw. For plywood, clamp a straightedge as a guide. And if you can stretch your budget, get a saw guide (like a Kreg track) – it makes ripping sheets a breeze!

If you're restoring an old shed or want precise angles for the roof, a miter saw is handy. But for a new build, circular saw is the workhorse. I've restored a dozen sheds and I use my circular saw 90% of the time. Pro tip: buy a Diablo blade for clean cuts. And don't forget to set the blade depth just past the wood thickness – it's safer.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with a circular saw and a guide. I'll pick up some safety gear too. Appreciate the help!
