DeWalt vs Makita circular saws: Which one for a serious DIYer?

Alright folks, I'm in the market for a new 7-1/4 circular saw and it's come down to the DeWalt DWE575 or the Makita 5007MG. I've seen both in the store, but can't decide. I mostly do weekend projects, but I want something that can handle some serious framing if I ever take on that addition. Anyone have experience with both?

Rick, I've used both on job sites for years. Makita’s 5007MG is a beast – magnesium base, plenty of power, and the dust blower actually works. DeWalt is good too, but I feel like the Makita cuts just a bit smoother and the blade guard is less finicky. But honestly, for weekend stuff, you might not notice the diff. What matters is comfort – since you grip it a lot. Try holding them in the store – one will feel more natural. Also check the blade brake – some DeWalts have a brake that can stop the blade quick – that's nice for safety.

I've restored old furniture and done some trim work with my Makita 5007F (the earlier version). It's been solid for 15 years, never missed a beat. I dropped it off a ladder once – still runs fine. I've also had a chance to use a friend's DeWalt – it's good, but the Makita just feels more precise for fine cuts. And the warranty and service network for Makita in my area are better. Just my two cents.
