Hey everyone, just got my first sliding compound miter saw. I've got safety glasses and ear plugs, but what else do you guys really use? I see some folks with full face shields and respirators. Is that overkill for a hobbyist like me?

Not overkill at all! I'd add a dust mask or respirator if you're cutting pressure treated wood or MDF. That fine dust is nasty. Also, don't forget a good dust collection setup - saves your lungs and keeps your shop clean. And yeah, I use a face shield over glasses when doing repeated cuts, keeps splinters out of your eyes.

I'm all about that hearing protection man. Get some decent electronic ear muffs that let you hear normal stuff but block the loud. Makes a huge difference for long sessions. Also, I always wear a snug fitting long sleeve shirt - those offcuts can be sharp and spinning. Protects your arms a bit.

Solid advice above. I'll add: never wear gloves around a spinning blade - bad news if they catch. And make sure your blade guard is working properly. I see guys removing them 'for better visibility' and that's a recipe for disaster. Keep it, and use a dust collector to see your cut line.

Thanks guys, really helpful. I'll pick up a good respirator and some electronic muffs. Already have a shop vac for dust, but need the hose adapter. Safety first!
