Hey guys, I'm installing some corrugated metal roofing on my shed and I've got a circular saw with a metal-cutting blade. Never cut this stuff before and I'm kinda nervous about sparks flying everywhere or the blade binding. What's the safest way to do this without ending up in the ER? Should I be clamping it down somehow? Any tips appreciated!

Luke, first off - WEAR EYE PROTECTION. I've seen more metal shavings in eyeballs than I care to remember. For corrugated, you want to support it along the whole cut line if possible. Throw some scrap 2x4s underneath. And go SLOW - let the blade do the work. If you force it, that's when it'll kick back on ya. Oh, and clear the area of anything flammable. Those sparks are no joke around insulation or sawdust.

Hank's right about the sparks. We use metal cutting saws on rebar all the time. Three things: 1) Clamp it TIGHT - use C-clamps on both sides of your cut line. 2) Mark your line with a sharpie and follow it exactly - wandering blades grab. 3) Consider using an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel instead - more control for curved cuts. Either way, leather gloves and long sleeves. That fresh-cut edge will slice you open like a can opener.

Thanks guys! Didn't even think about clamping - was just gonna have my buddy hold it. Bad idea I guess. What about blade type? I've got a 40-tooth carbide blade that says it's for metal, but should I get one of those abrasive blades instead?

Stick with the carbide tooth blade for roofing metal - abrasive blades throw even MORE sparks and wear out fast. Your blade should be fine. Just make sure it's rated for ferrous metal. And tell your buddy to stand back - no human clamps! Last thing you need is him jumping when sparks fly and ruining your cut line (or worse). Post pics when you're done!
