Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a deck this summer. About 12x20 ft, pressure-treated lumber. I've got a circular saw but it's old and underpowered. Should I go for a miter saw or a table saw? Or just get a better circular? Budget around $300. Thanks!

For a deck, I'd say get a good miter saw. You'll be crosscutting a ton of deck boards and joists. A 10" sliding compound miter saw would be perfect, and you can find a decent one in that budget. A table saw is nice for ripping, but for a deck you mostly need crosscuts. Just my 2 cents.

I second Bob. A miter saw is a game changer for framing. Fast and accurate. For ripping long boards, you can still use that old circular saw with a guide. Or if you have the cash, a track saw is even better for ripping. But within $300, get a miter saw. I've got a DeWalt and love it.

Thanks guys! Any specific model you'd recommend under $300? I see a Ryobi sliding miter at Home Depot for $279. Is that any good? Or should I bump up?

Ryobi is okay for occasional use, but if you can stretch to $350, get a Makita or Dewalt. They'll last longer and have better accuracy. Check Craigslist or FB Marketplace for used ones too. I snagged a barely used Makita for $250 once. Good luck!
