Almost stabbed myself with a flathead – need advice on safety gloves for screwdrivers

So there I was, trying to loosen a rusted screw on my lawnmower. The screwdriver slipped and the flathead went right into my palm. Luckily just a scratch, but it got me thinking – I never wear gloves when using screwdrivers. Do you guys bother with safety gloves? If so, what kind? I'm just a weekend warrior so don't need anything crazy expensive.

Gloves can actually be a double-edged sword with screwdrivers. If you wear thick leather gloves you lose dexterity and might slip more. I usually go bare-handed for precision work, but if I'm doing something risky like prying or using a lot of force, I'll wear mechanic's gloves with good grip. Just make sure they're not too bulky. Also, always use the right size screwdriver – that's the real safety tip. A sloppy fit is what causes slips.

I feel your pain, DrillMaster. I've got a scar on my thumb from a Phillips that slipped. Now I swear by cut-resistant gloves with nitrile coating. They're thin enough to feel what you're doing but save your skin from slips. Check out the ones from that big orange box store – like 10 bucks. Also, if you're working on something rusty, hit it with some PB Blaster first. Less force needed = less chance of slipping.
