Best screwdrivers for building a deck? Need advice before I strip another screw!

Alright guys, I'm about to start building a 12x16 deck next weekend. I've got a decent cordless drill but my screwdriver situation is a mess. I've been using some no-name set from HF and I keep stripping screws and camming out. I'm loyal to DeWalt for most of my tools, so should I just get their set? Or is there a better brand for deck screws? I'm using 3" coated deck screws if that matters. Help me out before I throw this thing through the window!

Hank, for decks you really want a dedicated driver bit more than a screwdriver. But if you're set on a set, DeWalt's fine but overpriced IMO. I do a lot of woodworking and I've had great luck with Wera Kraftform. The laser tips really bite into the screw head. For deck screws though, just get a good impact driver and a box of #2 Phillips bits. You'll strip fewer screws that way. Also, are you predrilling? That's probably your real issue.

Retired carpenter here. Hank, listen to Paul about predrilling. But for a deck, you're gonna want a decent ratcheting screwdriver for the tight spots and a stubby for between joists. I've used everything from Snap-on to Craftsman. These days I reach for my PB Swiss or Wiha most often. But honestly, for deck work, get a good impact driver and a few high-quality bits. The screwdriver set is secondary. If you must have a set, get something with hardened tips. Cheap ones round off faster than a pencil eraser.

I'm with Wendy. Precision matters. I've tested dozens of screwdrivers with a torque gauge. The cheap ones twist and cam out at half the torque of a good one. For deck screws, you want a #2 Phillips with a proper fit. Wera, Wiha, PB Swiss are top tier. DeWalt is mid. If you're on a budget, get the Milwaukee set—decent tips, good handles. But seriously, impact driver + impact-rated bits is the way. Also, make sure your bits are fresh. A worn bit will strip screws no matter how good your screwdriver is.
