Hey folks, I'm planning to build a 12x16 pressure-treated deck next month. I've got a basic cordless drill but wondering if I should invest in a proper cordless screwdriver or just use my impact driver. Also heard about ratcheting screwdrivers for decking? Any advice appreciated!

For a deck that size, you'll want a good impact driver. But get yourself a collated screw gun for the deck boards - trust me, your wrist will thank you. Ratcheting screwdrivers are for cabinets not decks. If you're set on a screwdriver, go with a 12V brushless, but impacts are where it's at.

I did my deck with just a 18V hammer drill on screw mode and went through 2 batteries per session. Get an impact driver! Also, square drive screws are a game changer, way less stripping. And get a magnetic bit holder, trust me.

Thanks guys! So impact driver is the way. Rick, what brand magnetic holder you recommend? And DrillMaster, does collated screw gun work with any screw brand or only specific ones?

Collated guns use strips, most brands have their own system. I use DeWalt's but pick one and stick with it. For magnetic bit holders, I just grab the cheap ones from Harbor Freight, they work fine.
