Building a deck - what screwdrivers do I really need?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to build a 12x16 deck next month. I’ve got the basic lumber and plans, but I’m stuck on tools. I don’t want to blow my budget on a bunch of fancy screwdrivers if I can get by with a couple good ones. What do you recommend for deck screws? Cordless drill vs impact driver? Thanks!

For deck building, get yourself a decent impact driver. I've been using a Milwaukee M18 for years, and it drives deck screws like butter. A regular drill will work, but you'll strip more heads and wear out your wrist. Also, get a set of square drive bits (Robertson) - they grip better than Phillips for deck screws. Don't skimp on the bits, cheap ones snap.

I agree with Carl. Impact driver all the way. I’d add that you should get a drill/driver combo kit if you can. You'll need the drill for pilot holes (especially for hardwood decking) and the impact for driving. Makita and DeWalt make great sets that won't break the bank. Also, consider a magnetic bit holder - saves dropping screws off the ladder!

Good advice so far. One tip: if you're using composite decking, use coarse thread screws designed for it. And get a cordless screwdriver with a clutch for the fascia boards - easier to control depth without over-tightening. I've seen too many decks ruined by over-driven screws. And yeah, impact driver is a must.

I’ll chime in with my 2 cents. I own like 15 screwdrivers, but for a deck you only need: a high-torque impact driver (I love my Festool, but any brand works), a good set of Robertson bits in #2 and #3, and a drill with adjustable clutch for pilot holes. Oh, and a ratcheting manual screwdriver for tight spots where power tools won't fit. Trust me, you'll thank me later.
