DeWalt vs Makita for a new impact driver - which one?

Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new impact driver. I've been using a cheap no-name for years and it's finally given up. I'm torn between the DeWalt 887 and the Makita XDT16. I mostly do DIY stuff, but also some light renovation work. Any thoughts? I've heard DeWalt has great power but Makita is more compact. Also, battery reliability is key for me. I've had bad experiences with off-brand batteries. Which one holds up better in the long run?

I've used both on job sites for years. If you want something that'll take a beating and keep going, the Makita XDT16 is my go-to. It's got great control and the compact size fits in tight spots. DeWalt is fine, but I've seen a few of their chucks wear out faster. Also, Makita's batteries have a better reputation for lasting longer in terms of cycles. For DIY, you can't go wrong, but if you value finesse and durability, Makita takes the cake.

Honestly, for DIY, you could flip a coin. But if you're already in one ecosystem, stick with it. I've got a bunch of DeWalt tools, and the 887 is a beast. It's got more torque than you'll ever need, and the brushless motor is efficient. I've had mine for 4 years, dropped it, and it still works like new. Batteries are solid too. Just make sure to get the 5Ah ones, not the 2Ah. But yeah, Carl makes a point about the chuck - I've seen some issues. Maybe check out the newer model if it's in your budget.

As someone who restores old furniture, I need precision more than brute force. I've used both, and the Makita has a better minute speed control for delicate screws. It's easier to start slow and not strip anything. Also, the light is better positioned on the Makita. DeWalt's light casts a shadow if you're right-handed. But if you're going to be driving huge lag bolts all day, the DeWalt extra torque is nice. For mixing DIY and light renovation, I'd lean toward Makita. Just my two cents from years in the shop.
